Tizazu was introduced to me on the ward as a having an interesting story to share about how he came to the Gamby Hospital. He is a charming, 18 year old, grade 11 student, who while studying to finish his schooling, is also working part time in construction here in Bahir Dar.
His accident was somewhat different to most to of the injuries RESTOR is dealing with in that it is not the result of a burn. His injured hand is the result a falling piece of metal that crushed his finger.
Initially he treated it with a traditional medicine called LEFE (a plant-based treatment for pain). But when that didn’t help, he went to the General Hospital, where his finger was x-rayed, straightened and he was given 500mg of the antibiotic Cloxcaclin. The infection however continued, but the local hospital couldn’t offer any suggestions. He has been dealing with the pain and infection since his accident 7 months ago.
When Tizazu saw a recent television news article about RESTOR’s mission, he decided to try his luck and see if we could offer help.
He was admitted for surgery 2 days ago after a further x-ray revealed a metal sliver imbedded in his knuckle. He is back daily for dressing changes and is quite happy with the result so far. He is looking forward to getting back to his job and study.
