Many of our patients walk long distances to visit our doctors. This is 14 month old Mulat whose arm was burned in a cooking accident as an infant. Her mother’s back was turned for only a second while lifting the large pan used to cook flatbread from the fire; baby Mulat fell into the flames. It takes only three seconds to receive a third degree burn.

Mulat’s family walked 250km by foot over five days from their mountain village to Bahir Dar to have her seen by our medical team. Our surgeons were able to operate on her, and our volunteers helped the family with fresh food and water and clean clothes after their long journey. The surgery ensures Mulat will have a fully functional arm growing up, with less scarring and permanent disfigurement.
